Samurai board game TEMPLATE Write question cards, using the card template below. Students roll the die and work their way to the castle. They answer a question each time they pass a gate. If they are correct they can continue, if not they must stay on the gate until their next turn and remain their until they answer a question card correctly. If you land on a square with a Japanese word you must say the word in English. You must say the correct word the first time in order to stay where you land. Grammar Hebi to hashigo
Give Ss a list of grammar exercises (with answers on the back). Download the hebi to hashigo game board and give each group a copy. Ss roll the dice and go around the game board. Each time they land on a snake or a ladder they need to answer a grammar question (or other type of questions). If they are correct and they are on a blank square or a snake's head they remain where they are, if they are on a ladder they go to the square at the top of the ladder. If they answer the question incorrectly, if they are on a snake's head they go down to the square at the end of the snakes tail, if they are on a square with a ladder they remain where they are. The Ss (or pair of Ss if playing in pairs) who are first to reach 'gooru' win. |

Ss work their way around the board game. When a Ss lands on a letter 'O' they select a card from the oral questions. 'K' for kanji and 'G' for grammar. Hobbies colour board game
Divide the class into pairs. Give each pair a copy of the board game. Players put their marker anywhere on the board game, but opposite to the other player. Students work their way around the game board translating sentences from English to Japanese. If the sentence is said correctly the player colours in the square. Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a board game. Players work their way around the game board translating sentences about verbs, dates, family members from English to Japanese. Donated by K Farrell

Likes and dislikes board game (food)
Toss a coin and move around the game board, 1 move for heads, 2 for tails. When a Ss lands on a food item the person to the left of them must ask if they like the particular food or drink item in Japanese. The person who tossed the coin must respond. (There is one yellow prompt card per person aimed at giving Ss a guide on how to answer and respond correctly in Japanese.) Extra: Ss must say each Japanese phrase on the yellow prompt card before reaching the goal, if they reach the goal before this they must return to the start. The winner is the first person to reach the goal having said all Japanese phrases. Created by I Foley

Divide the class into groups. Roll the dice and move around the game board accordingly. Make a sentence related to the picture. (For advance students, add extra information such as time, transport etc to make longer sentences).

Verbs board game
Students practise constructing sentences using the two grammar patterns: Topic はTime (に) Person と Vehicleで Place にMovement verb. OR Topic はTime (に) Person とPlaceで Object をVerb. Divide the students into groups of two or three. Students roll the dice and work their way around the game board. When they land on a picture of a verb they need to create a sentence using this verb. When the student lands on a time word they need to create a sentence using this time word. The winner is the first person to reach the 'ゴール'. Created by I Foley
